Cracking the SSC Stenographer Skill Test
The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) Stenographer exam is one of the most sought-after recruitments in India. While the Computer Based Test (CBT) determines the merit list, the Skill Test is the ultimate gatekeeper. It is qualifying in nature, but failure in the skill test means immediate disqualification regardless of your CBT score.
Proper SSC Stenographer practice requires a balanced approach covering shorthand dictation, flawless computer transcription, and consistent daily preparation.
Shorthand Dictation & Transcription Requirements
The skill test assesses your ability to take down dictation and transcribe it accurately on a computer. Depending on the grade you are applying for, the speed requirements vary:
- Grade D: Dictation is generally delivered at 80 Words Per Minute (WPM) for 10 minutes (800 words total).
- Grade C: Dictation is generally delivered at 100 WPM for 10 minutes (1000 words total).
After the dictation, you are given a specific amount of time to transcribe the passage on a computer. English and Hindi transcriptions have different time limits (e.g., 50 minutes for English Grade D, 65 for Hindi Grade D). Ensure you read the current year's official SSC notification for exact timings.

The Daily Preparation Workflow
To pass the SSC Stenographer skill test, you must build stamina. Taking dictation for 10 continuous minutes without hand fatigue takes months of conditioning.
- Morning Dictation: Start your day with a fresh 10-minute audio dictation from our Audio Lab. Treat it like the real exam. Do not pause the audio.
- Transcription Phase: Immediately sit at your computer and transcribe your notes within the allotted SSC time limit. Do not use spell-checkers.
- Error Analysis: Use the SSC error calculation method (Full and Half mistakes) to evaluate your transcription. Identify outlines you misread and practice them 10 times.
CBT & Written Exam Preparation
While the skill test is critical, you cannot reach it without clearing the CBT. The written exam tests General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, and English Language & Comprehension.
Integrate Mock Tests and Practice Questions into your weekly routine to ensure your CBT scores remain competitive.
