Hindi Typing Practice Guide

Navigate Unicode fonts, choose the right keyboard layout, and build the speed and accuracy required for Hindi skill tests.

Navigating Hindi Typing for Exams

Preparing for a Hindi typing test can be confusing due to the variety of fonts and keyboard layouts used by different government departments. Understanding the distinction between legacy fonts and modern Unicode standards is the first step to effective Hindi typing practice.

Unicode (Mangal) vs. Legacy (Kruti Dev)

Historically, exams were conducted using legacy non-Unicode fonts like Kruti Dev 010. While some state-level exams still use Kruti Dev, the vast majority of central government exams (including SSC, UPSSSC, and various High Courts) have migrated to Unicode fonts, primarily using the Mangal font.

When typing in Unicode (Mangal), the computer understands the actual language characters, whereas legacy fonts merely map English keystrokes to Hindi shapes. Because of this, Unicode is the modern standard.

Choosing Your Keyboard Layout: Inscript vs. Remington Gail

If your exam requires Mangal Unicode, you usually have a choice of keyboard layout. The two most prominent are:

  • Remington Gail: This layout is structurally similar to the old Kruti Dev typewriter layout. If you already know Kruti Dev, transitioning to Remington Gail is fast because most key positions remain the same. However, you will need to learn a few specific keystrokes for half-letters and special combinations.
  • Inscript (Indian Script): This is the standardized layout created by the Government of India. It is highly logical, grouping vowels on the left hand and consonants on the right hand. If you are learning Hindi typing from scratch, Inscript is highly recommended.

Accuracy and Speed Practice

Hindi typing involves complex keystrokes, matras (vowel signs), halants, and half-letters. It is very easy to make mistakes if you rush.

When practicing, focus entirely on accuracy. Unlike English, where a missed letter is just one stroke, a missed halant in Hindi can completely alter the visual rendering of a word, resulting in a full mistake in the exam software. Use our Hindi Mangal Typing tools to take 10-minute timed tests. Review your errors carefully—if you are consistently struggling with half-letters, practice typing combinations with the halant key until it becomes second nature.

Exam Preparation Advice

Always verify the official notification for your target exam. Do not assume an exam allows Remington Gail just because another exam does; some specific department tests mandate Inscript exclusively. Once you confirm the layout, stick with it. Switching layouts midway through your preparation will severely damage your muscle memory and WPM speed.
