Punctuation Rules in Shorthand Transcription: Where to Place Commas and Stops

Punctuation: The Make-or-Break in Transcription Grading Speakers do not say "comma" or "full stop" during official exams. You must interpret punctuation through auditory pauses and grammatical cadence. 1. The Full Stop (Terminal Drop) When the speaker's voice pitch drops and a complete subject-verb idea finishes followed by a distinct 1-second pause, insert a period. In shorthand notes, mark this with a small cross (x). 2. Commas in Compound and Complex Sentences Insert a comma before coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) connecting independent clauses. Place a comma after introductory dependent clauses (e.g., "Although the government approved the project, funds were delayed.").

  2. Name its category.
  3. Find the first missed cue.
  4. Repeat the smallest useful drill.
  5. Test the pattern again.
